Report Reveals: Smartphone Users Check Their Devices 70-80 Times Daily on Average

One in two (50 percent) Indian users pick up the phone without knowing why they turned on their smartphone, a new report revealed on Monday.

According to the international business management consulting firm Boston Consulting Group (BCG), a typical smartphone user picks up the phone 70-80 times a day.

“Based on our research, we’ve found that about 50 percent of the time, consumers aren’t clear about why they’re picking up the phone — they’re doing it out of habit,” said Kanika Sanghi, director of India’s Center for Customer Insights.

The report’s findings are based on real click/switch data from over 1,000 users and consumer interviews conducted across India.

In addition, the report stated that 45-50 percent of the time consumers are very clear about the task to be performed and 5-10 percent of the time consumers have partial clarity.

“Smartphones are evolving – recent discussions in the media and at industry events around themes such as ‘in-device AI’ or ‘appless experience via next generation AI’ are a testament to this evolution,” said Nimisha Jain, Senior Partner and Managing. Head of BCG.

The report also mentioned that Indian smartphone users love to stream video content (short form/long form) as 50-55 percent of their time is spent on streaming apps, socializing (texts/calls), shopping and searching (e.g. travel, work, hobbies etc.) and gaming.
